this website gave me the chills. apparently the woman in question found a runaway ferret, and put an ad in the local paper saying "Found-Exotic Animal" and listing her phone number! that was a serious mistake. the story she tells at this website makes me THANK GOD i no longer live in california. i am so glad there are people who are fighting to make ferrets legal there. because the idea of euthanizing an innocent animal simply because it lives in a state that has idiotic fish and game laws is beyond my understanding.

sooner or later ferrets have to become legal in california...i hope. the idea of snatching someone's dear loving pets and either euthanizing them or sending them away is a tragic miscarriage of justice, and quite frankly, makes me want to cry. :(

all i can say to any california ferret people who might be reading this is...KEEP FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT! someday, we'll see our little fuzzy friends legal everywhere, as they should be.

Phil, I believe that this all happened several years ago. I sent this story to BadgersMama early last week, and it gave me reason to be worried too. I too hope that one day things will change and they'll be welcome. Eventually, if they do not become welcome - we'll have no choice but to make another state our home.

you guys would be welcome here in virginia. not only are ferrets 100% legal, but so are degus, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and gerbils. also i noticed java rice birds in a pet shop, and monk parakeets!

ohhhhh and here in rural southwest va...there is very little traffic, and the air is clear! ;)

That story made me cry.

Cindy Adkins is a monster. The treatment of the ferret owner was absolutely intolerable. I can't even imagine what it would be like to have that happen. It hurts to even think about it.

I can't believe they have the right to confiscate (a) living, loved pet(s) as if it(they) were sacks of cocaine. Doesn't that interfere with "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness", or some other passage in the constitution?

i agree 100% with cindy adkins being a monster. she doesn't sound like the kind of person who should be working with animals as a fish and game officer. let her work in a prison or some place like that.

on the other hand, she would probably abuse the prisoners also!

Wow, that is so sad. What I don't get though is that I see a bunch of people posting ads for other illegal animals on craigslist and in the pennysaver, and they list the name of the species not just exotic animal, and they don't get caught. The breeder I buy my gliders from posts ads sometimes and never gets caught. Why pick on just ferrets? And all she gave was her phone number, how did they get her address? It makes me nervous to even give someone my phone number now.

That is simply horrific.
I was thinking about that as well.
It's pretty easy to keep them undetected as long as you lay low...
Apartments over here have random unscheduled monthly checks for unwanted pets such as ferrets.
Obviously putting an ad in the paper wasn't a genius idea.
How sad...
It'll happen. We just have to keep at it.

As an apt. lesee you have every right to be present when an inspection takes place. If you make sure you have an "out" aka a place to put said fuzzy during the inspection that's off-site, they'll never be the wiser.

Kokodaddy is correct. By law you can tell them not to enter your apartment until you get home. For that matter, change the locks on your door. If they complain that they tried to get in and you changed the locks, you can come back with... you don't have authorization to enter unless I'm home, how would you know I changed my locks unless you tried to enter without my permission.... GOT THEM! The key is to be smarter then everyone else.

And this is why the original deadbolt for our place is safely stored in a cupboard, awaiting its reinstalled upon our exodus...
