Lots of drama yesterday.
I didn't realize that the heat was such a problem for ferrets.
Apparently, it's life threatening.
Poor fella's not being able to sweat and all.
Soo.. I took a thermometer into my room and set it down for a while, came back and it was over 90 degrees F in here. Yikes, right?
So I need to fix this problem...
WHICH MEANS...that I have to get a mini airconditioner to fit into the window, like the one my mom has in her window that keeps her room f r e e z i n g.
[I know because I often stay in there all day to beat the heat]
My dad also has a swamp cooler in his study which is the room right next to mine.
So...Since we have a house that's older he doesn't believe the wiring can hold four air conditioners in one house... [We also have one in the livingroom.]
So he may have to get that repaired...
They're all miffed because they think this is just another thing for the ferret but it's for me too. I can't sit in here for three minutes without melting.
They suggested keeping the ferret in the basement. Blah. All they hear are horror stories.
My father is reluctant because his old roommate had a ferret that lived in the couch and stole stuff all the time, being extremely mean and bitey in the process.
He doesn't realize not all ferrets are like that and certainly not if they're handled properly. I think both of them would really enjoy having ferrets around if they'd relax and give it a chance.

You got it. Ferrets need a cooler place to stay. There are way's to keep them cool without A/C but it's much better to have the A/C for them. As far as putting them in the basement... that's a no, no. Ferrets need to be around people and they need natural sunlight.

Oh yes of course. I laughed at him.
In the basement indeed!
Gosh. With all those black widows running around, I don't think so.
Not my sweethearts.
They're staying in my room with me.
My problem is... I have $250 and some change.
[Grad money]
$100 for the cage right off.
That leaves me $150
$100 for the A/C
$50 for starter supplies for the sweeties.
Gosh. It goes fast, doesn't it?
I'm aware that buying things for fuzzy's can become an addiction.
I'll have to watch out for that. I found myself wandering the pet store.
"oh my gosh this would be great" or "They'd love this!" or "I *have* to get them this."
i have a fan in bandit's room, and the shades are drawn on really hot days here. plus i have the windows open. a fan would probably work ok for your ferret...just get one with alot of power. we don't have air conditrioning in this apt yet. but bandit seems to doi just fine with a fan, as do the other animals here. the heat has been in the 80's and rarely the 90's here. it's more humid than hot.
keeping a ferret in the "basement" is NOT a good idea!!! it would get bored and lonely really fast. plus it might eat something poisonous.

As a side note, typically rescues come with everything. So you may just not have to pay anything for a cage and starter items. You may just want to save that money for the first visit to the vet, which should always be done in the first 48 hours.

I wouldn't say that rescues typically come with everything. Its a hit and miss thing. We've had three rescues and only one came with a cage (and it was so gross, it was thrown away right away...)
Unfortunately, rescues aren't usually all that well cared for (Lilo was an exception, but came with very lilttle of her belongings and what we were given was beat up pretty bad. She's spoiled rotten now, as I have a soft place in my heart for all of our girls...Tiara, Koko, and Lilo being my absolute little darlings...)
Sad about the ferret that lived in the couch... That's so dangerous for him!
maybe if worst comes to worst and u keep getting a run-around from your contacts, i would just head to nevada and get one. i hate to see u going through such a difficult time getting one.

It's pretty tempting, I must say.
It gets soooo irritating when they just stop contacting you back.
Like, you'd think they'd at least have the decency to say "Hey I decided this other woman should take the ferret."
They say nothing.
Oh and back to Koko's Daddy
I can handle two ferrets, what happened to ferret math?
I will still have time for them. I still know what I'm getting into...

I agree!!
Shaska- Why not consider a rescue in Nevada that comes with a cage? It may be a drive, but then you may get everything (or almost) and still be taking in a young rescue! Find out what the local newspaper is and look in their classifieds online.
Also, look around the internet (www.craigslist.org, www.hoobly.com, www.adpost.com) for ferret cages and you may even find a fuzzy (please be very very careful if you're looking within CA).:balloon:

Loop hole.
I've been invited by a family friend to Las Vegas for three nights.
That's in... where? Nevada!
If there's anyone close to there let me know.
I'm interested in seeing if there are any ferrets available in that area.
-excitement-

LOL There are more ferret kits in Las Vegas than almost anywhere... Take a kitty carrier with you just in case you need to put someone in it on the way home. If you do, hydrate and keep him or her COOL!!!

Shoot Shoot Shoot...
So, I was contacted today by a very helpful woman who has been trying to hook me up with a fuzzy for ages. She lives in Santa Barbara[sp?] aanywho.. The first ferret didn't pan out because she was the middleman and she felt aweful about it so she called me up thismorning.
She said that she has a ferret named pepper, a little boy.
He's just under a year old now and full of energy. He was abandoned in a military drop box and found and given to her to rehabilitate basically. He was just a little baby. Unfortunately, he had blood in his urine.
She took him to get x-rays and it looks as though there's something calcified at the entrance to his kidney. She sent his records to a very high end vet in L.A. and is going to make an appointment soon for the surgery. She doesn't have time for him because she already has five other ferrets. She thinks he would be a perfect ferret for me because he is so adorable and loving. She's already spent over $700 dollars just on medical bills for him, but know's he's worth it because he's still so young. He has plenty of life left.
If I decided to go for him, I would have to wait at least a month to get my paws on him. I don't mind waiting because he has had such a rough start in life and I know a stay with me would turn everything around for him and I could teach him to be such a lovely fuzzy.
So I talked to her on the phone for about an hour thismorning. She was very nice and helpful, and has sooo many connections because she is a rescue agent and she has worked for so many pet businesses. She told me where I can find a great cage for the cheapest and all of that.
So, I was set on that idea. Waiting would let me start school first just like my parents wanted and I could get everything prepared for my sweet lovely Pepper. [His nose is speckled so she came up with that idea] There is however not a 100% chance he'll recover and be fine so she's slightly worried but she says her experience says this will be simple and he'll be fine. completely healthy after this.
NOW.
I was just contacted by Heidi once more.. she says that I sound great and she's interested in giving me her couple. A boy and a girl that I previously mentioned. They are however three years old. They're not trained and haven't gotten the attention they need so they're angry ferrets. They are however 10 minutes away from me. TEN MINUTES AWAY.
Tempting.
I'm leaning more toward waiting for my sweetheart...but...what do you think?
The couple comes with their cage food and toys...and I can get them tomorrow if I wanted.
But then again, it's Pepper...and I already love him.
Let me know.
<3
in my opinion, if pepper's surgery is successful, he's the one i would choose.

Yeaaah... I think so tooo...
Darnit...
as far as the other two ferrets go...3 years old is pretty old for ferrets, and if they haven't been handled and are biters, you could have a serious problem on your hands. pepper's your best bet in my opinion, unless u go to las vegas and buy a baby from a pet shop.

So, okay.
Everything is up to me now.
I want "pepper" alot. Like, really. I just have this feeling in the pit of my stomache that he's the ferret for me.
My parents, though, have changed their minds. Now that it's a reality they no longer want me to have a fuzzy. They know I'll do anything for it though and so they're willing to let me have it if I take care of everything myself.
I have to find a job. pronto. I have one lined up as we speak. I'm also creating a resume today and hopefully I'll have a job within the month so I have a steady flow of income when he arrives.
Sounds good, right? I have the money now and I'm getting more money soon. What could be a problem.
The warm thing again. It's too hot. 109 today, I think. My room has no cooling and they don't want him in any other room in the house.
I'm willing to buy a window fan and that keeps rooms SO cold because my mom has one and her room is frigid.. however. Our old circuts cannot support another major appliance.
I've been looking up cage cooling techniques. I already know to have frozen water bottles in there and perhaps a wet washcloth and a cage fan hooked up far away that he can't stick his nose or paw into the blade cage. However, I'm afraid that may not be good enough. It's about 85 degrees in here right now and I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do to cool off the little guy until my dad gets someone over her to work on this.
Do any of you know of any appliance that can cool down a room without sitting in the window?
Is that even possible? GHUH. I'm sorry it seems so difficult. I mean, I keep running into road blocks and I know everyone thinks I should just give up but I just can't.
My mom is bitter and she keeps spatting the word "Weasle" at me. "Why do you want a stupid smelly weasle" she says.
-.- Me="grrr" She thinks it's going to be disgusting and stink up the whole house and dig holes into the walls. She's misguided and refuses to be corrected about this.
She keeps trying to relate my wanting a fuzzy to when I collected stuffed animals when I was a kid. Completely different, I feel.
So now everything is up to me. all the financial responsibility.
She's trying to get even and has decided that I don't get any rides anywhere anymore.
She doesn't understand that this could really really help me...
To feel better, to feel.
I don't even know what to do.

I'm just full of updates, aren't I.
I had a talk with my dad and I completely convinced him of my intentions.
He now knows that this means something and is willing to work with me.
He's going to get a cooling system into my room and so that's going to be taken care of.
The room will be fine!
We're going to the auction next weekend but in the meantime petsmart and petco are where we're going to look for suitable cages.
I'm making my resume now so hopefully I'll have a job relatively soon.
I'm cleaning up my room starting tomorrow to get everything ready and do last minute proofings.
They're willing to help me find stuff and transport stuff as long as I deal with financial burdon, which I am completely willing to do.
They'll help me with any vet expences.
So everything's going to be fine. I can't wait to get my sweetheart.
As soon as Jen sends me pictures I'll make sure to post them so you can all squeel with happiness along side me.
<3 Love you guys

I'm not upset with you... just kind of listening to all you have to say and waiting to hear about how it all pans out for you... you've had a few options that you've talked about - can't wait to see how it turns out for you. Sometimes the best way to learn about a person is to just listen, which I've been doing.
