I just had to say I love this board. I have been a member of many other boards and it becomes about the clicks and politics and not about the animals anymore. Here is not like that. Its all about the ferrets or other animals if you have them. And I LOVE that. I mean this board really looks out for eachother and gives great advise for the fuzzys.

Just wanted to say Great Job.

02-16-2007, 08:47 AM
wow what a beautiful tarantula! Bmama, i know they seem scarey at first, but once u get used to them u realize what really amazing critters arachnids are.

however, if someone was afraid of them i wouldn't force them to be near it. that would be like someone forcing me to touch a snail or a slug, animals that i am deeply afraid of.

Ain't she awesome that's my girl, I brought her exo-seleton to work and sat it on my co-workers desk she liked to had a fit, People wonder why get a tarantula, you can't hold them, you can't play with them but it is cool to watch her crawl around on the table while you are playing domino's ha

fuzzyfriends
02-16-2007, 09:53 AM
you can get them de-poisoned and then you can hold and play with them. I had one when I was a kid, he was sooo cool, you have to find a vet that will do it. So they don't kill you but after that they are great.

I read your post and had to go on a hunt... I didn't think they were harmful to humans... Here's some info.
-----------------
Even if through carelessness a bite should occur, the venom when injected into man causes only slight swelling, with some numbness and itching which disappears in a short time. The chances of being bitten are so slight that one has little need to worry.

Tarantulas are harmless to humans and are often trained as pets, although they can inflict painful bites if provoked.

Although both males and females are capable of inflicting a bite when threatened, they rarely do so and their venom is considered to be non-toxic to humans.

Bites are unlikely to cause problems other than pain at the site. Skin exposure to the urticating hairs will cause itching and a rash.

yup thats when she was 10 so over 15 years ago but still. I remember it to this day. She swelled up and when she got to the hospital she went into shock and didn't make it, they said it was from the bite.

That is so sad. I'm deathly afraid of spiders. And seeing a tarantula just makes it worse... those things are like 100 times larger than a normal spider.... They just creep me out. And they have like 8 eyes on one side.... now tell me that's normal...

LISAR
02-16-2007, 10:30 AM
Ive never been one to be really afraid of spiders. I did have a spider in my home in Fla. I called her Old Brown- I kept her around for the simple fact that she would make webs and catch/ kill the palmetto bugs. But as far as Tarantulas? Im leaning more towards leaving them outside in their Natural Environment- letting them be spiders.

Littlebits ferret villa
02-16-2007, 01:09 PM
Tarantulas also have this hair on their bottom that can stick in your skin and cause a rash that is another defence mechanism, the hair actually has some vennom in it to cause animals to spit it out. I am the type of person that like to defeat her fears.

Me too... however I do wonder sometimes why I jumped from that plane. No really, I did. Will I do it again.... ah, no! But at least I can say I did it. I will continue to face my fear of heights, but when it comes to something that has more legs than I do arms and legs and has 16 eyeballs... I'll leave that alone. I'd rather jump from a plane again before I would hold a spider. You're a brave woman!

Phil

i was curious...what type of tarantula is that? a chilean rose?

Sasy
02-17-2007, 06:37 AM
No spiders for me....I have a fear of these things...the bigger they get the more irrational my fear.

Warning...spider picture coming........

I found this in my parents house while I was in college. They were out of town, boyfriend was clear across town. I couldn't just leave him because that meant he would just hide somewhere in the house. I actually contemplated asking a construction worker from the house next door to get him out of the house. How stupid is that...asking a strange man into your house when you are home alone because you are afraid of a spider? I finally mustered up the courage to trap him and get him back outside..aaaaaaaaaack I was a mental wreck though.
