View Full Version : quivering when they wake up
hi. i have noticed that bandit sometimes "trembles" or quivers when we wake him up after he is sleeping. judy and i thought he was cold the first time he did it and wrapped him in a blanket. is it normal for ferrets to tremble or quiver when they wake up, and if so, why do they do it?
thanks much for any info. :)

Skitterz does it too, but it only when we take her out of the cage when not fully awake. So i am pretty sure it is normal.

bandit does the same thing when we take him out of the cage when he is not awake yet. thanks for the info!
Although I'm not sure why they do it, so I can't answer that part of your question. I do know that it is fairly common for ferrets to do this. I haven't noticed any of mine doing so, but when I open the cage door I let all of mine come out on their terms. So sometimes it might be 10 minutes before one of the kiddos joins playtime. Maybe that's why I haven't noticed it so much with my 5.

I read in the ferrets for dummies book that they quiver or shiver to raise their body temperature. When their sleeping respiration, heartrate and body temperature drops a little.

Everybody is basically correct. You will find, especially with the younger babes, when they go into a deep sleep, their metabolism slows down, thereby dropping their body temp.. When waken, they will shiver until their own body temp comes up. Again this is mostly in the younger babies.
If I rememebr right they grow out of this stage. Im not for sure.
But I am sure Kokodaddy is lurking around here somewhere to correct me.:online2long:

Actually, mine arent quite as bad as when they first came home. Calamity used to really shiver when she would wake up in the morning. I used to tuck her in my bathrobe until she quit.
Now she only shivers just a little bit, and its all over. My Cindylou- doesnt hardly quiver at all. Its barely noticable.
They all must be a little different, just like their personalities.:ferret:

Sweetums used to shiver a lot when I'd wake her up. Bubba never really has, probly cause he's always been a chunky boy. But ever since we moved down here from Oregon, they don't do it at all anymore. Maybe because of the heat.

bandit does it intermittently.
